Grab your Voyager passport and join us on an epic journey across the seas to New Zealand. Encounter the people who made New Zealand what it is today.
‘Pack your Bags’ is the theme of Voyager NZ Maritime Museum’s October School Holidays activities. From the 1840s to the 1960s our ancestors immigrated to New Zealand. They came the only way possible – by ship. A long and often arduous journey.
The objective of the ‘Pack your Bags’ programme is to give every kid the opportunity to experience and learn what it must have been like to actually pack your bags and leave your homeland to migrate to another country thousands of miles away.
Every kid will receive a Voyager passport – a most authentic looking 12 page item. All activities for the day will relate to the processes required to immigrate and on completion they will be registered and stamped in the passport. It will also comprise a map of the museum, a quiz- 10 questions asking what would you need to take to a new country, a recipe of yesteryear, a page where Auckland Libraries recommend relevant books on settling and pioneering in New Zealand. Also included are discount vouchers for trips on the steamboat William C. Daldy and the Dockline trams.Enjoy some extraordinary encounters in the rocking cabin as well as in all the museums’ galleries. Each host will be literally an immigrant to New Zealand. A genuine identity dressed accordingly and with his or her story to tell. So you could meet up with a miner, a nanny, a seamstress, a woodcutter – a myriad of characters from a bygone era. These chats with such characters could provoke the kids to want to learn about their own history, their ancestors and how they came to New Zealand
There’s a load of fun to be had whether its with the very original and hilarious ‘Fit for Passage’ checks or giving it your best shot in the race to ‘pack your bags’. A finger printing operation will be under way in the museum’s Imaginarium.
Pack Your Bags will run daily from Monday 1st October to Sunday 14th October. Activities operate from 9.30am to 3.30pm each day.
Auckland Residents - $5.00 per child for activities, with accompanying adults free.Visitors to Auckland - Activities included in museum admission.
